Mungo National Park

Trip to Mungo National Park, with a stop in Swan Hill on the way up and Sea Lake/Lake Tyrrell on the way home.

As part of our camera club, we had the opportunity to go to Mungo National Park for a weekend. Mungo is well known for where Mungo Man and Mungo Lady were discovered, the olds aboriginal remains dating back thousands of years. 16 members took the 6 odd hour drive to Mungo, with a stop in Swan Hill on the way – stopping at the Pioneer Village there, and at Sea Lake/Lake Tyrrell on the way home.

Mungo was a spectacular place to visit. Desert like with lots of sand, sand dunes and sand structures. The sunsets and sunrises were also pretty spectacular. While the loop road was closed, we were still able to visit most of the interesting places that make up Mungo. The Great Wall of China – a wall of sand dunes that goes for miles, Red Top which is make up of fissures and sand sculpture made from errosion of the sand walls and ground. The Woolshed which makes a lovely backdrop for photos in the sunrise and the Information Centre which gives you lots of information on the culture and lives of Mungo.

The absolute highlight was taking the Sunset tour. Our aboriginal guide was interesting and. informative. The views absoutely stunning – with the moon rising on one side of the Great Wall of China and the sun setting on the other. You get to access the dunes when you take a tour (something that cannot be done otherwise) and walk to the highest point of the dune to take in the sunset and sunrise. The cultural information on Mungo Man and Mungo Lady, the other remains found at Mungo, and the fireplaces that litter the dunes was really interesting. It was amazing just how many thousands of years of culture and life is actually known about, in this day and age.

It was certainly an interesting place to visit, and definitely worth a few days stop if you are that way.
