Step 7 – Building your Itinerary

So your trip is all planned out, and if you have been following my process you will know that all of my plans are detailed in a spreadsheet. While that is great for planning, keeping track of bookings, payments, potential costs etc, it is not necessarily a user friendly format for an Itinerary.

Thankfully my husband came to the rescue on that front – telling me about an app that Concur is linked with for his business plans and expenses. The app is called TripIt and once you have joined you simply email your confirmation emails to it and it starts putting together an itinerary for you. Sounds too easy right? Well actually, it is!

I downloaded the app and sent a couple of my Booking.com accommodation bookings to it. And before you know it I had Check In and Check out dates for each of these bookings in a simple itinerary. Once I was happy they worked correctly, I spent time going through all my emails and fining any of the booking confirmations I could and sending them to Tripit. And voila, I had the great starting of a detail itinerary. The accuray with which it picks up the details is amazing and limited the number of corrections I had to do. A couple I had to add manually if I didn’t have a booking confirmation (i.e. tickets to the Roman Baths etc) but this will very easy to do. I even added my sisters flights in manually as i didn’t have the email confirmation of these, just a screen shot. Anda because TripIt is linked with a lot of the airlines, it actually updated the arrival time of one of the flights to the correct time.

The app is linked with airlines, hotels, third party booking websites etc. It can keep track of flight updates, loyalty points and lots of other travel related areas to help you with your travel plans. You can also save your travel documents to it, click on your accommodation and select Navigate and it will take you to a navigation screen and so much more.

For a small cost (it cost my approx $75AUD) you can upgrade to Pro for a year, and this give you even more options. I particularly like that it has Airport Maps and it an help you navigate around foreign airports etc.

And even better, you can share it with your family and friends quickly and easily. You can send them a link that they can view on the web or you can encourage them to download the app. You can also have more than one email linked to the account so that you can send the booking confirmations from more than one email and it will know what account to place the booking into. If you are doing a group travel itinerary this would be a great option to plan it all out.

Check out the website here if you want more information. I have not been paid to promote this app in any way, I simply think it is a great accessory to help you with your travel plans.
